The Bánffy family built here from the fifteenth century and rebuilt in Baroque form in the eighteenth, creating a complex of ranges, stables, riding hall and gardens large enough to earn the nickname the Versailles of Transylvania. It was gutted in 1944, stripped afterwards, and used as an agricultural cooperative under communism, by which time roofs had gone and vaults had collapsed. Since 2001 it has been the subject of a long restoration run as a training project, where craftspeople learn conservation skills by working on the building, and progress is deliberately slow and reversible. The result is unusual to visit: some ranges are restored and in use, others are stabilised ruins with grass floors and open sky, and the contrast is the point. The Electric Castle music festival has been held in the grounds since 2013, which funds part of the work and fills the estate for a week each summer.
What you actually see
- Restored ranges - completed wings housing exhibitions and workshops.
- Stabilised ruins - roofless sections left as consolidated shells.
- The Baroque stables - among the most complete surviving buildings.
- The park - overgrown grounds slowly being recovered.
When to go
April to October; the site is largely outdoors and unpleasant in winter. Avoid the Electric Castle festival week unless you are attending it, when the estate is closed to ordinary visitors. Weekday mornings are quiet and the light in the ruined ranges is best early.
Honest expectations
This is a building under repair, not a furnished stately home: much of it is roofless, scaffolded or closed, and there are no period interiors to tour. Interpretation is limited outside guided days. The restoration will take decades. Facilities are basic and the village has little to offer.
Nearby
Cluj-Napoca is half an hour southwest; Nicula monastery lies north.
