El Yunque, in the mountains of eastern Puerto Rico, is a lush, misty tropical rainforest and the only such rainforest in the entire United States National Forest System. This verdant realm of towering trees, tree ferns, cascading waterfalls and cool natural swimming pools drapes a range of green peaks often wreathed in cloud. Its trails lead past waterfalls like La Mina and up to observation towers with sweeping views, all serenaded by the ceaseless chirping of the tiny coqui, the beloved frog that is a symbol of Puerto Rico. It is a refreshing, green contrast to the beaches.
What you actually see
- The waterfalls - the cascades like La Mina and Juan Diego.
- The rainforest trails - the hikes through lush green forest.
- The observation towers - the Yokahu and Mount Britton views.
- The coqui frogs - the tiny frogs whose song fills the forest.
When to go
December to April, the drier season, for the best hiking, though as a rainforest it can rain any time, part of its lush character; go early to enjoy cooler air and to secure the timed reservations now required for the main area. Weekdays are quieter than weekends.
Honest expectations
It is a genuine rainforest, so rain, mud and cloud are common and part of the experience, and popular trails and swimming holes can get busy, with timed reservations now needed for the main entrance; some areas and roads have been affected by hurricane damage. As an easily reached, beautiful tropical rainforest of waterfalls, pools and green peaks just from San Juan, though, El Yunque is a lovely and refreshing highlight.
Nearby
San Juan, the north-coast beaches and Luquillo's food kiosks are close by.
