Caguas

Caguas sits in the Turabo valley south of San Juan and has invested heavily in cultural infrastructure over the last two decades: a cluster of small museums around the plaza covering tobacco, popular art, the Caguas region and criollo identity, and on the edge of the city a botanical and cultural garden laid out on a former sugar estate with sections on Taino, African and Spanish contributions to the island's culture alongside the planting.

Background

Caguas was first founded as San Sebastián del Piñal de Caguax and is named after Caguax, the local Taino chieftain when the Spanish arrived in 1493. Europeans settled here in the mid-16th century, and the town was founded on January 1, 1775. The municipality lies in the Caguas Valley between the Sierra de Cayey and the Sierra de Luquillo, covers 153.00 km2 in 11 barrios and reaches 885 m at its highest point. With 127,244 people in 2020 it is the fifth most populated municipality in Puerto Rico. From 2009 it was the island's only municipality recognised as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, until Vega Baja joined it in 2026.

When to go

December to April is the drier season and the most comfortable. Museums keep weekday and Saturday hours and close on Mondays. The garden is best in the morning.

What to expect

The museums are small and several can be done in an hour. Opening hours vary and some have closed for periods. The city is otherwise a commuter centre with heavy traffic.
