Vila Viçosa Ducal Palace

The Paço Ducal was the seat of the Dukes of Braganza, and its hundred-and-ten-metre front of white Estremoz marble faces a huge square with a bronze equestrian statue of João IV - the eighth duke, who became king in 1640 when the nobility restored Portuguese independence from Spain, reportedly with reluctance. The family kept the palace as a country seat afterwards, and it stayed in use until 1908, when Carlos I and his heir left here for Lisbon and were assassinated on arrival; the rooms remain broadly as they were that week, which gives the visit an unusual weight. Visits are guided and cover state rooms, private apartments, a chapel and a kitchen with hundreds of copper vessels. Separate collections hold the armoury, a coach museum and a treasury. Behind the palace lies the walled hunting park, the Tapada Real, some two thousand hectares.

When to go

March to June and September to November. Two to three hours. Guided visits at fixed times; closed Mondays. Check which collections are open - they are ticketed separately.

Honest expectations

Guided visits only, mostly in Portuguese, at set times that fill. Multiple separate tickets add up quickly. Photography is prohibited indoors. Alentejo summer heat is severe and the square has no shade.
