Masasa Beach

Masasa sits on Tingloy, the island lying across the channel from Anilao, and it has become the budget weekend escape for anyone willing to work slightly for a beach. Getting there means a public boat from the Batangas mainland to Tingloy's port, then a walk of thirty to forty minutes over the hill - or a tricycle if legs are short on time - dropping into a cove of pale sand and water clear enough that the reef edge shows from the shore. Snorkelling off the beach is the main activity, with coral and fish close in, and boats run around the island to the cliffs, the Sepoc-side rocks and neighbouring coves. Accommodation is homestays and camping under the trees rather than resorts; food is what the sari-sari stores and a few carinderias supply. Weekend crowds from Manila have grown enough that the barangay now runs environmental fees and rules, and midweek remains the quiet version.

Public boats run on fixed schedules and stop early - missing the last one means staying. Facilities are simple, water and power can be limited, and everything is cash. Bring rubbish out with you.
