Laiya Beach

Laiya is where Metro Manila learns to swim. The beach runs for several kilometres along the San Juan coast in southern Batangas - beige sand rather than white, gently shelving, calm most of the year and backed by a continuous line of resorts from bamboo cottages to full hotels with pools and water slides. The formula is domestic family tourism at scale: day-use packages, videoke, banana boats, grills on the sand and rooms booked out entirely on long weekends. Beyond the resort strip the coast improves - the coves toward Laiya Point and the islets offshore give snorkelling and quieter sand, and boats run to nearby dive spots. It is not the Philippines' most beautiful beach and does not claim to be; what it offers is a four-hour drive from the capital to warm shallow sea, which for millions of people is the entire point.

When to go

November to May for dry weather; weekdays and shoulder months for space and lower rates. Holy Week and long weekends fill the entire strip.

Good to know

Beaches are resort-controlled in most sections, so access usually means paying a day-use fee. Sand is coarse and beige, not powder white. Weekends are loud - videoke is part of the culture here.

Anilao's dive sites, Masasa Beach on Tingloy and the Taal area are all within a couple of hours.
