Slogen

Slogen rises 1,564 metres from the shore of the Hjorundfjord in a near-perfect pyramid, and the standard route from Urke climbs every metre of that from sea level, four to five hours up on a marked but rough path with a final section along a narrowing ridge to a small summit. William Cecil Slingsby, who climbed it after the local first ascent of 1870, described the view as the finest in Europe, and while that is a Victorian mountaineer's enthusiasm, the top does give an unusually complete panorama of the Sunnmore Alps, the fjord directly below and the Atlantic beyond. The summit area is small and exposed, dropping sharply on three sides. Patchellhytta, a DNT lodge, sits below and allows the ascent to be split.

When to go

July to September, once snow has cleared from the upper ridge; earlier the summit section can be dangerous. Start early and allow a full day. Cloud on the peak is common and removes the reason for going.

Good to know

This is a long, steep and exposed climb, not a walk, with 1,500 metres of continuous ascent and a summit ridge that demands a head for heights. The descent is punishing. There is no water high on the route and no shelter on the ridge.
