Ornesvingen

Ornevegen, the Eagle Road, climbs from Geiranger toward Eidsdal in eleven hairpin bends, and Ornesvingen is the highest of them, about 620 metres above the fjord, where a viewing platform built as part of the Norwegian Scenic Routes programme projects over the edge. The view runs straight down the Geirangerfjord with the village below, the cruise ships at anchor and the Seven Sisters waterfall visible on the far shore. The platform includes a water feature that carries meltwater across the paving and off the edge, a designed detail that most visitors miss. The road was completed in 1955 and was the first year-round link between Geiranger and the outside world.

When to go

May to September, when the road is open and the cruise season fills the fjord below; the route closes in winter snow. Morning light is better for photographing down the fjord than afternoon.

Practical notes

Parking at the viewpoint is limited and coaches dominate it in season. The road is narrow with tight hairpins and heavy summer traffic. Cloud in the fjord frequently obscures the view.
