Dalsnibba

Dalsnibba stands at 1,476 metres above Geiranger, and a toll road built in 1939 climbs the last stretch to the summit in a series of hairpins on gravel and asphalt, which makes it one of the highest road-accessible viewpoints in northern Europe. From the top the Geirangerfjord is visible in its full length, more than a thousand metres below, with the surrounding peaks and, on clear days, snow fields and glaciers in the distance. The Geiranger Skywalk platform, opened in 2016, projects out from the summit with a glass barrier at the edge. Snow lies here into summer, and the road opens only when it can be cleared, usually late May or June.

When to go

June to September, once the road is cleared; it opens late in a heavy snow year and closes in autumn. Clear weather is essential, since cloud below the summit hides the fjord entirely, which happens often.

What to expect

The road is tolled and narrow with tight bends, and the summit is frequently in cloud, in which case the toll buys nothing. The top is cold and windy even in July. Coach traffic from cruise calls at Geiranger fills the car park.
