Likholefossen sits on the Gaular watercourse, a river system protected against hydropower development in 1993 and now the centrepiece of the Gaularfjellet national scenic route. The fall drops through a rock cleft into a green pool, and a steel and timber footbridge crosses immediately above it as part of a designed walking path along the river, so the water passes directly beneath your feet. The path continues along the Gaular past further falls and pools on a route known locally as the waterfall trail. Higher up, the scenic road climbs to the Utsikten viewpoint above Balestrand, an angular concrete platform over the valley, and drops through a series of hairpins.

What you actually see

  • The footbridge - a crossing directly above the falling water.
  • The rock cleft - the channel the river is forced through.
  • The waterfall trail - a path along the Gaular past further falls.
  • The scenic road - Gaularfjellet with the Utsikten viewpoint above.

When to go

May to September, when the road over Gaularfjellet is open and the flow is strong from snowmelt; the pass closes in winter. Autumn colour along the river is good in late September.

Honest expectations

This is a short roadside stop with parking for a limited number of cars. The rock and bridge are wet and slippery in spray. The fall is modest in height, and its interest is the setting and the bridge rather than scale.

Nearby

The Utsikten viewpoint is further up the pass; Forde lies west and Balestrand on the Sognefjord east.
