Boyabreen

Boyabreen is an arm of Jostedalsbreen that sits in a rock bowl about a thousand metres above the Boyadalen valley, and it is the easiest glacier view in Norway: a car park with a cafe sits directly below, and a path of a few minutes reaches a meltwater lagoon with the ice above it. Blocks calve off the hanging front and fall onto the slope below, sometimes visibly. The glacier has retreated significantly since the 1990s, when it reached much further down, and comparison photographs at the site make the change plain. The valley itself is short and steep, with the Supphellebreen arm nearby and the Norwegian Glacier Museum a few kilometres down toward Fjaerland village.

What you actually see

• The hanging ice front - a glacier arm in a bowl above the valley.
• The meltwater lagoon - a small lake below the ice, fed by the melt.
• The calving blocks - ice falling from the front onto the slope.
• The retreat markers - comparison images showing the ice loss.

When to go

May to September for clear roads and open facilities; the ice is visible year-round but winter access is weather-dependent. Cloud regularly hides the front, so a clear day matters.

Honest expectations

Do not approach or walk onto the ice: blocks fall without warning and the lagoon shore is within the fall zone in places, with signs saying so. The glacier is much smaller than in older photographs. The site is a roadside stop of half an hour, not a hike.
