Mount Taipingot above Songsong on Rota is known as Wedding Cake Mountain because old sea levels cut it into distinct terraces as the island rose, leaving a hill that steps up in tiers to a flat top. It sits on the peninsula that closes Songsong's harbour. The terraces are the clearest illustration anywhere in the Marianas of how these islands were lifted out of the sea.

What you actually see

  • The terraces - the tiers cut by old sea levels as the island rose.
  • The peninsula - the arm the hill sits on, closing the harbour.
  • The flat top - the summit above the stepped sides.
  • The geological story - visible evidence of the island's uplift.

When to go

December to June is the drier season with the clearest air. The hill is visible year round from the village. Late afternoon light shows the terraces best.

Honest expectations

There is no maintained trail to the top and the hill is mostly viewed rather than climbed. Vegetation obscures the terraces from some angles. Getting to Rota means a flight.
