Kokino

Kokino sits on a volcanic ridge at around a thousand metres, and what makes it notable is a set of stone markers cut into the rock on a lower platform which, viewed from marked positions on an upper one, align with points on the eastern horizon where the sun rises at the solstices and equinoxes and where the moon rises at the extremes of its cycle. Pottery finds date the site to the Bronze Age, roughly the nineteenth century BC. Whether to call it an observatory or a ritual site marking a calendar is debated, and the more cautious description is a megalithic site with astronomical alignments. Either way, standing on the ridge with the markers and the horizon laid out is genuinely striking.

What you actually see

• Solstice gatherings - people come for sunrise at the turning points of the year.

When to go

April to October; the ridge is exposed and cold in winter. Sunrise at the solstices and equinoxes is when the alignments actually do something, and it is worth timing a visit for one if the idea appeals.

Honest expectations

There is no visitor centre, no signage worth the name and no facilities at all, so without preparation or a guide it reads as an interesting rock outcrop. The final approach is on rough minor roads. The observatory claim is contested among archaeologists, and confident assertions about ancient astronomical precision should be treated with some scepticism.
