Kratovo sits inside the crater of an extinct volcano, the town built down the sides and across the streams at the bottom, joined by old stone bridges. It grew on mining, and the wealth of that period produced a set of stone towers, defensive houses built by leading families, of which six survive of a much larger number. The lanes are steep and narrow and the whole town is compressed into the bowl.

When to go
April to October is most comfortable. The town is small and quickly walked. Museum hours are limited.
Honest expectations
Several of the towers are in poor repair and not open. The town is small and a couple of hours covers it. Parking in the narrow lanes is difficult.
