Getting thereAt Azumini, about 30 km southeast of Aba in Abia State
EntryCharged; boats hired locally

The Azumini river runs through southeastern Abia with unusually clear water over a bed of pale sand, which gives it the blue-green colour that has made it a local destination, with white sandbanks along the bends used as beaches. Canoes and small boats are hired at the landing for trips upstream between banks of raffia palm and forest. Swimming is the main activity, though the current is stronger than it looks in places. Development is informal: bars, food sellers and boat operators around the main access point, busiest at weekends and public holidays with visitors from Aba and Port Harcourt. Sand dredging and pollution upstream have affected water quality at times.

What you actually see

  • The clear water - the blue-green river over its pale sand bed.
  • Sandbanks - the white beaches on the bends used for sitting.
  • Boat trips - the canoe runs upstream from the landing.
  • Raffia and forest - the vegetation along the banks.

When to go

November to March in the dry season, when the water is clearest and lowest; the rains raise and cloud the river. Weekdays are quiet, weekends and holidays crowded. Mornings are best.

Honest expectations

Water clarity varies and has been affected by upstream activity. There are no lifeguards and the current is deceptive. Facilities are informal and litter is a problem at weekends. Boat and entry charges are negotiated.

Nearby

Aba lies northwest; the Akwa Ibom border is south.
