Ibeno Beach

Ibeno beach runs for a long distance along the Atlantic shore of Akwa Ibom, a broad strand of pale sand backed by coconut and scrub with the open ocean in front, and it is usually described as the longest continuous sand beach in Nigeria, though the claim is not precisely defined. Fishing settlements work along it and canoes are drawn up on the sand. Development is limited to a few resorts and bars near the access point, and the beach empties quickly away from them. The oil industry is present in this part of the delta, with a terminal along the coast, and pollution incidents have affected the shoreline at times.

When to go

November to March in the dry season for the calmest sea and best beach conditions. Weekends bring visitors from Eket and Uyo. The rains from April to October are heavy on this coast.

Honest expectations

There are no lifeguards and the Atlantic surf and rip currents are dangerous. Facilities are limited to a few bars and resorts of variable standard. Oil industry activity is visible along the coast and pollution has affected parts of the shore. Litter is a problem near the access point.
