Arochukwu Long Juju Cave

Ibini Ukpabi, known in colonial accounts as the Long Juju, was the oracle of the Aro at Arochukwu, consulted from across Igboland and beyond to settle disputes and cases, and its authority underpinned the Aro trading network that dominated much of southeastern Nigeria before the twentieth century. The site is a wooded gorge with a stream, entered down steps past features the guides identify in sequence: the gate, the water where petitioners washed, the tunnel, the place where those judged against were said to disappear, and the hill from which they were led away. The colonial administration destroyed the shrine in 1902. What survives is the landscape and the account given by Aro guides.

When to go

November to March in the dry season for the descent; the rains make the gorge slippery. Mornings are cooler. Guides are arranged in the town and should be booked rather than assumed.

Honest expectations

Almost nothing built survives; the visit is landscape plus narrative. The descent and climb are steep and slippery. Interpretation is entirely through the guides and versions differ. The subject is bound up with the slave trade and is addressed directly.
