San Cristóbal Volcano

San Cristóbal is the highest volcano in Nicaragua at 1,745 metres and the most prominent feature of the northwestern plain, a steep symmetrical cone that vents a constant plume of gas from its summit crater and has had frequent ash eruptions in recent decades. It is part of a group of five cones including Casita, whose flank collapsed in 1998. The climb is the hardest of the standard Nicaraguan volcano ascents: eight to twelve hours return, much of it on loose ash and scree at a punishing angle with no shade and no water, and the summit is often in gas that stings the eyes and throat. Guides from Chinandega or León run it for people who want the challenge rather than the view.

When to go

December to April for the dry season. Climbs start before dawn to avoid the heat. Access closes when the volcano is producing ash, which happens regularly, so plans need to be flexible.

Good to know

This is a hard and unpleasant climb by most accounts: loose ash that slides underfoot, extreme heat, no water and summit gas that can force a retreat. It is much less rewarding than Telica or Cerro Negro for the effort. Guides are essential and access is not always granted.
