Hervideros de San Jacinto

The hervideros, the boilers, are a geothermal field on the lower flank of Telica where superheated groundwater reaches the surface through a patch of grey clay, producing mud pots that bubble and burst, steam vents and a smell of sulphur across several hectares. The ground between them is a crust over hot mud and it is genuinely thin in places, which is why children from San Jacinto village act as guides and lead visitors along the safe lines; people have been burned here stepping off the path. Marked paths and a small platform have been added. The site takes under an hour and is usually combined with a Telica hike or seen on the drive between León and Estelí.

When to go

December to April for dry footing; the crust is more dangerous when rain has softened it. The site is open in daylight and the visit is short. Morning light shows the steam best.

The ground is genuinely dangerous off the marked lines and burns have happened; following the guide matters. Children guide for tips and the arrangement can feel uncomfortable. The site is small and the visit brief. There is little shade and the smell is strong.
