The Phosphate Cantilevers

At Aiwo the phosphate century built its signature over the sea: the cantilever loaders - steel giants reaching from shore across reef to deep water, conveying the island's fortune into ships' holds - stand as Nauru's industrial monument, one arm historic and rusting in photogenic decline, later works carrying the trade's continuing chapter beside it. The structures against the Pacific's blue make the island's defining industrial image; shore viewpoints serve the photograph and the story - the boom, the wealth, the reckoning - which the whole island's landscape footnotes. The structures stand on the western shore where deep water comes close enough in for ships to lie off.
