Moqua Well

Beneath Yaren's coral limestone, Moqua Well holds the island's hidden water: a cave chamber where a freshwater lake pools dark and clear underground - historically a main source of the island's drinking water, and today the island's most atmospheric visit: steps descending into the cool, torchlight finding the water's mirror, and the limestone's dissolved architecture arching low overhead. The well's stories - of sustenance through the island's hardest chapters - travel with local telling; the descent asks sure feet and borrowed light; and the cool below is its own small reward on an equatorial island.

History

The underground lake is called a well because it was long the main source of drinking water for the people of Nauru, above all during the Second World War; in 2001 a fence was put up around it for safety (Wikipedia, Moqua Well).
