Mayapan

After Chichen Itza's fall, the political center of Yucatan moved to Mayapan - the walled capital of the Cocom confederacy from roughly 1220 to 1440, the last great Maya city before the Spanish came. Its builders quoted their predecessors deliberately: the Castillo of Kukulcan here is a smaller, rougher echo of Chichen's famous pyramid, and a round observatory temple answers the Caracol. What Mayapan lacks in refinement it repays in intimacy - the Castillo's steep stair, closed along with the rest of the site since 2024, long rewarded climbers with a view over the 4-square-kilometre walled city, where some 4,000 structures housed perhaps 15,000 people, and the scrub forest hums heat over plazas that see a handful of travelers on a busy day. Recent conservation shows well: fragments of murals - warriors, death imagery, painted niches - survive under shelters, stucco masks flank stairways, and a cenote opens at the plaza's edge. Iguanas run the temple counts. As a coda to the peninsula's ruin circuit - the fall of the classic world made stone - it is quietly essential.

When to go

Mayapan has been closed to visitors since INAH's notice of February 2024, so confirm before planning a trip. When open, dry-season mornings suit the climb before the heat.

Honest expectations

Masonry is rougher than the classic sites - come for atmosphere and the climb, not carved perfection. Facilities are minimal. The Castillo stair is steep and rail-free; descend with care.
