The Silver Hills at the northern tip are what is left of the oldest of the three volcanic centres that built Montserrat, active something over two million years ago and long since extinct, worn down into dry rounded hills quite unlike the steep forested slopes further south. The vegetation is thorn and scrub rather than rainforest and the tracks over them give long views along both coasts.

What you actually see

  • The worn hills - an eroded volcanic centre rather than a peak.
  • The dry vegetation - thorn and scrub instead of rainforest.
  • The coastal views - long sightlines down both sides of the island.
  • The age - the oldest of the three centres that built Montserrat.

When to go

December to April is the dry season and the walking is easier. It is hot and exposed in any month. Early morning is best.

Honest expectations

There is no shade at all and the tracks are exposed. Routes are informal rather than waymarked and a guide is worth having. Water must be carried.

Nearby

Rendezvous Bay is below to the west, and Little Bay is south.
