Little Bay on the northwest coast is where Montserrat is rebuilding after the volcano took Plymouth: the ferry and cruise berth, the beach, a scatter of bars along the sand and the ground set aside for a new town that is still largely unbuilt. The bay itself is dark sand with fishing boats pulled up on it and the headland of Little Bay Hill closing the northern side.

What you actually see

  • The dark sand - the volcanic beach the bay is built around.
  • The port - the ferry and cruise berth serving the island.
  • The bar strip - the places along the sand where the island gathers.
  • The new town ground - the land set aside for the replacement centre.

When to go

December to April is the dry season and the busiest time. The bay is used year round. Weekends are livelier along the sand.

Honest expectations

The new town is mostly a plan rather than a place; there is far less built here than the maps suggest. Facilities are limited. The beach is working ground with boats and gear on it.

Nearby

Rendezvous Bay is north, and the Cultural Centre is above the bay.
