Montserrat National Trust Botanical Garden

The National Trust garden at Olveston is a compact planted space beside the Trust's headquarters, laid out with the island's native trees, medicinal and bush-tea plants, orchids and a section on the crops Montserrat grew. The Trust building alongside holds a small museum on the island's history and the eruption. Volunteers do much of the work and the garden is looked after rather than manicured. The Trust also runs the island's heritage work, and staff there are the people to ask about sites elsewhere.

What you actually see

• The bush medicine plants - the traditional useful plants collected together.
• The orchids - the collection under shade.
• The Trust museum - the small display on the island and the eruption.

When to go

December to April is the dry season. The garden is open on weekdays and limited hours otherwise. Mornings are cooler.

Honest expectations

It is small and an hour covers it comfortably. Opening hours are limited and worth checking before going. The museum is a single room rather than a large display.
