Akumal

Akumal means "place of turtles" in Maya, and the name is a daily fact: the bay's seagrass meadows are permanent pasture for green sea turtles, which surface, breathe and graze in water rarely deeper than a snorkeler is tall. That accessibility nearly loved the bay to death - by the mid-2010s unregulated crowds were chasing and touching the animals - and the response reshaped the experience: the turtle zone is now a managed refuge where in-water observation runs through certified guides in small groups, life vests standard, fins restricted, touching and pursuit banned, and ropes marking where free swimming ends. It works; the turtles still come, joined by rays, barracuda and the occasional nurse shark along the reef line, and a calm visit sees several grazers in an hour. The beach itself remains one of the coast's prettiest crescents - white sand, palms, dive shops and beach bars from the pioneering days when Akumal was the Riviera's first resort - with Half Moon Bay's rockier snorkeling and the lagoon of Yal-Ku a short walk north.

When to go

Mornings for calm water and unhurried turtles; December to April for the driest days. Summer brings sargassum some years - the turtles stay regardless.

Honest expectations

The managed system means costs and queues at peak hours - it is the price of the turtles' peace; book the first slots. Beach clubs and parking press hard commercially. Sunscreen rules are strict and right.
