Luštica is the peninsula that closes the Bay of Kotor on its southern side, and it has stayed much quieter than the bay itself: olive groves and maquis over limestone, stone villages many of them half abandoned, Austro-Hungarian forts on the ridges, and a string of small coves on the outer coast reached by rough tracks or by boat. Žanjice and Mirišta are the best known beaches, and a large resort development has been built at the eastern end.

What you actually see

  • The stone villages - old settlements across the peninsula, many partly abandoned.
  • The coves - small beaches on the outer coast reached by track or boat.
  • The olive groves - old plantings covering much of the interior.
  • The Austro-Hungarian forts - fortifications on the ridges above the bay mouth.

When to go

May to October is the season; much closes outside it. July and August fill the accessible coves. Spring is best for walking the interior.

Honest expectations

Access roads to the coves are narrow, rough and badly signed. The popular beaches are crowded and reached mainly by boat in season. Large-scale development at the eastern end has changed the character of that part.

Nearby

Tivat is northeast, and the Blue Grotto is on the outer coast.
