Tivat sits on the outer arm of the Bay of Kotor and was for most of the twentieth century a naval town, with a shipyard and repair works for the Yugoslav fleet. Since 2006 the yard site has been rebuilt as Porto Montenegro, a marina for very large yachts with apartments, shops and a naval heritage museum holding two submarines. The town beyond it is ordinary, and the Gornja Lastva village above and the Island of Flowers are within reach.

What you actually see

  • Porto Montenegro - the superyacht marina built on the former naval yard.
  • The naval heritage museum - submarines and equipment from the Yugoslav fleet.
  • Gornja Lastva - the old stone village on the slope above the town.
  • The Island of Flowers - the small peninsula with a monastery, north of the town.

When to go

May to October is the season. July and August are busiest and most expensive. The airport makes it a common arrival point.

Honest expectations

The marina development is expensive and has little to do with the rest of the town or country. Tivat itself has few historic buildings. Beaches near the town are modest.

Nearby

Lustica is west, and Kotor is northeast.
