King Nikola's Palace, Bar
A late nineteenth-century royal residence on the Bar waterfront, now a museum with a botanical garden.

The palace at Bar was built in 1885 for King Nikola and his family as a seaside residence, a modest complex of a main building, a smaller castle, a chapel and a winter garden set in grounds planted with species brought by ship from around the Mediterranean and beyond. It now houses a museum with the royal furniture, ethnographic and archaeological collections and an art gallery, and the garden is one of the better plantings on the coast.

When to go
April to October is the main season; winter hours are shorter. Mornings are quietest. The garden is at its best in spring.

The palace is modest and the visit is short. Labelling is limited and largely in Montenegrin. The seafront around it is built up.
