The palace at Bar was built in 1885 for King Nikola and his family as a seaside residence, a modest complex of a main building, a smaller castle, a chapel and a winter garden set in grounds planted with species brought by ship from around the Mediterranean and beyond. It now houses a museum with the royal furniture, ethnographic and archaeological collections and an art gallery, and the garden is one of the better plantings on the coast.
