Haj-Nehaj Fortress

Haj-Nehaj stands on a rock ridge at about two hundred and thirty metres above the coast between Sutomore and Bar, a fortress the Venetians built in the fifteenth century on an older site to watch the road and the sea. Its name comes from two words meaning roughly come on and no chance, a reference to how hard it was to take. Inside the walls are cisterns and the ruined church of Saint Demetrius, which served both rites.

When to go

April to June and September to October are the most comfortable; the climb is hot in summer. Mornings are best. The path is slippery after rain.

Practical notes

The climb is steep and takes about forty-five minutes with no shade. The path is unmarked in places. There is no interpretation and no facilities at the top.
