Khuvsgul Lake

Mongolians call Khuvsgul the blue pearl, and it holds a startling share of the world's unfrozen fresh water in a single deep trench of mountain taiga near the Russian border. The water is clear enough to read depth in metres, larch and pine run down to the shore, and horse and yak herders keep gers along the grassy flats. North of the lake live the Tsaatan, reindeer herders whose way of life continues in the mountain forest. In winter the lake freezes thick enough to drive on, and an ice festival in March brings sculpture, horse sleds and skating races to the surface.

When to go

Summer from June to September is the accessible season, with green shores, riding and boat trips. The ice festival falls in early March, when the lake is solid and temperatures brutal but the light extraordinary. Spring and autumn shoulder weeks bring mud and closed roads.

Honest expectations

Getting here is the cost: a domestic flight plus a rough road, or two long driving days from Ulaanbaatar. Accommodation is ger camps with shared facilities rather than hotels, and nights are cold even in July. Visits to reindeer herder communities should go through operators who pay and consult the families properly - unmanaged visits have caused real friction. Mosquitoes in midsummer are formidable.
