Tsagaan Agui Cave

Tsagaan Agui, the white cave, opens in a limestone outcrop in the Bayankhongor Gobi and runs back through several chambers, one of which is lined with crystal that catches torchlight. Its scientific importance is the floor rather than the walls: excavation by Russian and Mongolian teams found stratified deposits with stone tools spanning an extraordinary depth of time, with the earliest layers attributed to the Lower Palaeolithic, making it one of the oldest evidenced human occupation sites in Mongolia. The cave has been used intermittently ever since, and by herders in recent centuries. Reaching it means a long drive across the Gobi on tracks and then a short walk up to the entrance, and there is nothing at the site except the cave: no signage, no guardian, no facilities. A strong torch is essential.

History

Mongolian archaeologists discovered the cave in 1972, a joint Soviet-Mongolian expedition first investigated it in 1987, and excavations followed in 1988-1989 and from 1995 to 2000, resuming in 2021; the government has protected it since 1988, and Buddhists still visit it as a place of pilgrimage (Wikipedia, Tsagaan Agui).

When to go

May to September for the tracks; summer heat in the Gobi is severe on the drive though the cave stays cool. Early or late in the day is better for the walk up. Winter access is difficult.

Things to know

There is no interpretation, no lighting and no supervision; bring torches and expect to scramble. The archaeological deposits are protected and digging or collecting is out of the question. The drive is long, remote and needs a driver who knows the tracks. No facilities exist at the site.
