Santiago Apoala

Apoala is where the Mixtec world began. The codices place the origin of the Mixtec lineage at a river issuing from a cave in this valley, where the ancestors were born from a tree - and the landscape still reads as mythic: a narrow green valley of maize and peach trees enclosed by vertical red-and-ochre cliffs, entered by a dirt road that switchbacks down from the Mixteca Alta plateau. The village of Santiago Apoala runs the visits on community terms, with guides walking the short circuit of wonders: the Cueva del Diablo, from which the river emerges cold and clear; the Cola de Serpiente - the "serpent's tail" waterfall dropping some 60 metres off a cliff lip into a pool; the Peña Verde, whose sheer face bears prehispanic paintings; and the canyon-walk between towering walls where swallows nest. Cabins, a comedor and a small museum of codex reproductions serve visitors; nights are cold, dark and loud with insects. It is remote, humble and completely genuine - one of Oaxaca's great little valleys.

When to go

November to May, when the road behaves and the water runs clear; the rainy season swells the falls and complicates access. Two days lets the walks unfold without rushing.

Before you go

The road in is rough, long and best driven in daylight with a high-clearance vehicle. Facilities are basic community cabins with cold nights and simple food. Guides are required for most trails and inexpensive.

The Dominican monasteries of Yanhuitlan and Teposcolula anchor the Mixteca Alta route back toward the highway.
