Diosso Gorge

Twenty minutes north of Pointe-Noire, the coastal plateau simply gives way: at Diosso, erosion has carved the soft red-and-ochre strata into a horseshoe of fluted cliffs - bays, spires and organ-pipe ridges dropping sixty-odd metres to a jungle floor, the colours striping from rust through apricot to cream and igniting at golden hour. Rim paths link the viewpoints (village guides keep them and earn their tips), the adventurous descend a slithering path to walk beneath the walls, and the nearby Ma-Loango museum - the regional kingdom's history in a colonial-era residence - rounds the excursion into Pointe-Noire's best half day.

What you actually see

When to go

May to September for firm paths; late afternoon sets the cliffs burning - the photograph is a sunset appointment. Rain turns the descent path into a red slide worth skipping.

Honest expectations

Rim edges are unfenced and the strata crumble - keep honest margins, and take the local guides both for safety and as the visit's fee structure. The site is compact: a rich half day with the museum, not more. Hawkers are low-key by regional standards.
