Vikos slices the Zagori highlands with walls that drop away for some 900 metres at the famous measuring point, and Guinness World Records has listed it as the deepest gorge on earth relative to its width - there the rims stand only about 1,100 metres apart above that immense fall. The gorge is the heart of the Vikos-Aoos National Park, and the classic through-hike from Monodendri to Vikos village runs six to seven hours along the dry riverbed and shaded flanks, ending where the Voidomatis springs burst from the mountain into one of Europe's clearest rivers. Those who prefer their abyss without the effort drive to the Oxya viewpoint near Monodendri or the Beloi balcony opposite - both deliver the full vertical shock. Around it all spread the stone villages of Zagori, with their arched packhorse bridges, slate roofs and plane-tree squares.
What you actually see
- The Oxya and Beloi viewpoints - cliff-edge balconies over the sheer drop.
- The through-hike - Monodendri to Vikos village along the gorge floor.
- The Voidomatis springs - glass-clear water rising at the gorge mouth.
- The Zagori bridges - arched stone crossings scattered between villages.
When to go
Late May to June brings wildflowers and full springs; September to October gives stable weather and amber woods. Midsummer is hot on the exposed stretches, and winter snow closes much of the walking.
Honest expectations
The through-hike is long, rocky underfoot and mostly without water sources or exit points mid-route - decent boots and an early start matter. Mobile signal drops in the gorge; tell someone your plan. The viewpoints, by contrast, cost nothing but a short drive and a scramble.
Nearby
Monodendri and Papingo villages, the Voidomatis rafting runs and Ioannina's lakeside old town.
