Monodendri

Monodendri stands on the eastern lip of the Vikos gorge, its grey stone houses and slate roofs arranged around a paved square with a plane tree. A cobbled path leads from the village to the monastery of Agia Paraskevi of 1412, built onto a ledge directly above the void, its chapel sheltering under an overhanging rock; beyond it a narrow cut path continues along the cliff face to hermit cells, an exposed walk with the gorge dropping away below. The village is also the main trailhead for the through-hike of Vikos, and a short drive above it leads to the Oxya viewpoint, the most famous balcony over the canyon. Stone-paved kalderimia radiate from the village, and the local speciality is pita, savoury pies of many kinds.

When to go

May to October for walking; spring brings wildflowers and full springs. Winter is quiet and often snowy, with limited services. Early morning light fills the gorge from the Oxya side.

Honest expectations

The cliff path beyond the monastery is genuinely exposed with drops and no railing, and it is not for anyone uneasy with heights. The village is small, with a handful of guesthouses and tavernas that close in low season.
