Dominican Route of the Mixteca

The Mixteca Alta is dry, high and sparsely populated, which makes its sixteenth-century monasteries all the more staggering: the Dominicans built here at cathedral scale for congregations of maize farmers, financed by the wealth of Mixtec lordships and the cochineal trade. Three survive as the route's spine. Yanhuitlan rises off the highway like a cliff - a vaulted nave over 70 metres long, a gilded main retablo by Andres de la Concha, and a hill-top platform that lifts the whole mass above the valley. Teposcolula holds the marvel of them all: an open chapel of six ribbed vaults on slender columns, a hybrid of Gothic engineering and indigenous open-air worship, considered the finest structure of its kind in the Americas. Coixtlahuaca adds a soaring Gothic-plateresque church, its own open chapel and carved facade in golden stone. Restoration after the 2017 earthquakes has been long and patient. The villages between offer little more than a comedor and a plaza - the point is the architecture, standing in silence where empires briefly met.

When to go

November to May for dry roads and clear light; morning sun favors Yanhuitlan, afternoon Teposcolula. Confirm opening days - village schedules and restoration work both intervene.

Honest expectations

Distances between sites run 30-60 minutes on secondary roads; without a car the day is hard. Interiors are dim and often partly scaffolded. Services in the villages are minimal - eat in Nochixtlan.
