The Saltillo sarape is the most famous blanket in Mexico and, in its classic form, one of the most technically demanding textiles in the Americas: a long wool wrap woven in extremely fine warp, with a central diamond medallion - the ojo or bocamanga - surrounded by concentric bands that shade from colour to colour in the rainbow gradations that made collectors call them serapes de Saltillo from the eighteenth century onward. Their peak was the colonial and early independence era, when the best examples took a year on the loom and cost the price of a house; industrial weaving and synthetic dye later flooded the market with the cheap striped versions sold at every roadside. The tradition survives in a small number of Saltillo workshops that still weave on treadle looms with hand-spun and naturally dyed wool, and in the city's sarape museum, whose collection lays out the historical pieces beside the working process. Visitors can watch weaving, understand what separates a hundred-hour blanket from a thirty-peso one, and buy accordingly.
What you actually see
- The classic pattern - central diamond and rainbow bands.
- Treadle looms - fine warp worked slowly by hand.
- The sarape museum - historical pieces and the technique explained.
- Natural dyes - cochineal, indigo and plant colours in the yarn.
When to go
Year-round; weekday mornings find looms working. Saltillo's altitude keeps summers mild and winters cold.
Honest expectations
Genuine hand-woven sarapes are expensive and worth it; the cheap striped tourist versions are a different product entirely. Ask about fibre, dye and loom before buying. Workshops are small and sometimes closed without notice.
Nearby
The Museo del Desierto and Saltillo's cathedral are in the city; Parras's vineyards lie two hours west.
