Palancar Reef

When Jacques Cousteau's cameras made Cozumel famous in the 1960s, Palancar was the reef doing the convincing. The system runs several kilometres along the island's protected southwest, inside the Arrecifes de Cozumel marine park, and its architecture remains the Caribbean benchmark: giant coral buttresses rising from white sand, split by canyons, tunnels and swim-throughs that divers thread in cathedral light. The named sections each keep a personality - Palancar Gardens' shallow pinnacles for second dives and snorkelers, Horseshoe's celebrated amphitheater bend, Caves' tunnel mazes, Bricks' deeper walls dropping toward the abyss - all flown in Cozumel's effortless drift style: the current does the work while eagle rays, turtles, angelfish clouds and the endemic splendid toadfish supply the traffic. Visibility routinely runs thirty metres and beyond. Snorkel boats work the gardens' shallow crowns, glass-bottom options serve non-swimmers, and dive operators treat the morning two-tank at Palancar as the island's daily liturgy.

When to go

December to August for the season's best; April to June brings the calmest crossings. Norte winds in winter can close ports for a day - build slack into short trips.

Honest expectations

These are drift dives - operators expect basic comfort with current and group procedure. Park rules ban gloves, touching and reef-unsafe sunscreen. Snorkeling covers the crowns, not the canyons; divers get the architecture.
