Utuko is a stretch of reef platform just north of Alofi with steps down to it and pools and channels in the coral that make it the easiest snorkelling on Niue to reach, close enough to the capital to walk to. The water is exceptionally clear because the island has no rivers and no soil runoff. Sea snakes, the katuali, are common in the water here and are not aggressive.

When to go
May to October is the dry season and calmest. Low and mid tide are best for entry. Swell closes the platform.
Honest expectations
The coral is sharp and reef shoes are essential. Swell makes entry dangerous and the platform should be assessed first. Sea snakes are venomous although bites are almost unknown.
