Uluvehi Landing
An old canoe landing on the western coast, with steps cut into the cliff.

Uluvehi on Niue's northern coast is one of the old canoe landings, a place where steps and a channel were cut into the coral cliff so boats could be brought in and hauled up on a coast that otherwise offers nowhere to land. Missionaries came ashore here in the 1840s. The cliff drops straight to the water and the channel is narrow. It is a working piece of engineering rather than a monument. Landings like this were cut at intervals around the island because there is no natural harbour anywhere on the coast.

When to go
May to October is the dry season and calmest. Swell makes the landing dangerous. Cyclone season runs November to April.
Good to know
The steps and channel are slippery and dangerous in swell. There is no beach and no facilities. The track down needs care.
