Mineral de Pozos

Pozos went from a mining town of tens of thousands to a near-ghost of a few hundred within a generation - revolution, flooding of the shafts and the collapse of silver prices emptied it in the early twentieth century - and the desert has been slowly eating it ever since. Walking the edges of town means walking among roofless haciendas de beneficio, the ore-processing yards, with arcades open to sky, chimneys standing alone, and the distinctive triple ovens of the Jesuit-era Santa Brigida workings rising like pyramids of adobe and stone. Since the 1990s a second population has arrived: artists, gallery owners, boutique hoteliers and musicians, drawn by the ruins and the cheap adobe, so that the plaza now carries cafes, mezcalerias, a music-school tradition and workshops making prehispanic instruments - ocarinas, drums, wind pipes - sold and played on the square. The town runs a blues festival, a prehispanic instrument gathering and Day of the Dead events. Between them, silence, cactus and long views over the Sierra Gorda's approach.

What you actually see

• The hacienda ruins - roofless ore yards and lone chimneys.
• Santa Brigida's ovens - the triple Jesuit smelting cones.
• The plaza - galleries, cafes and instrument workshops.
• The desert light - mesquite, cactus and enormous sky.

When to go

October to April for comfortable desert days; festival weekends fill the small hotel stock. Mornings and late afternoons give the ruins their best light.

Honest expectations

Mine ruins are unstable and shafts are open - explore with a local guide rather than wandering into holes. Services are limited and cash-first. The town is quiet by design; nightlife is a mezcal and a guitar.

San Miguel de Allende is an hour southwest; the Sierra Gorda missions begin two hours east.
