Canada de la Virgen
The astronomer's pyramid near San Miguel - an Otomi-Toltec ceremonial complex aligned to the sky, visited only on guided walks through ranch country.

Canada de la Virgen sits on a ridge above the Laja river valley, and everything about it points at the sky. Built between roughly 540 and 1050 AD by peoples of the Bajio frontier - the site is generally associated with Otomi and Toltec-era cultures - its main complex, the House of the Thirteen Heavens, rises in a stepped pyramid over a sunken plaza whose geometry tracks solstices, equinoxes and lunar cycles, with the surrounding hills forming the horizon calendar. Excavation found burials, offerings and evidence of a ceremonial centre rather than a city. The visit is deliberately controlled: private vehicles stop at the access point, a shuttle crosses ranch land, and visitors walk the last kilometre with a guide before climbing the pyramid's stair for the valley view. That structure keeps the site quiet and the interpretation good - guides handle the archaeology and the astronomy, and equinox mornings draw ceremony and crowds together. It is the best ancient site within reach of San Miguel, and almost nobody who visits the town knows it exists.

When to go
October to April; equinox and solstice mornings for ceremony, ordinary days for calm. The site closes on set days each week - check before driving out.
Honest expectations
Guides are compulsory and the schedule is fixed; independent wandering is not possible. The walk and stair are exposed to full sun - hat and water required. Spanish-language tours dominate; English needs arranging ahead.
