Henequen Haciendas

For half a century around 1900, Yucatan grew the world's rope. Henequen - the spiny agave whose leaves yield sisal fiber - made the peninsula one of the richest corners of Mexico, financed Merida's mansion boulevard, and studded the flatlands with hundreds of haciendas: arcaded great houses, machine halls with iron shredders, brick chimneys, workers' villages and narrow-gauge rail lines threading the agave fields. Synthetic fibers killed the trade, and the estates fell into a half-century of vines - from which they have returned in three guises. Museum haciendas like Sotuta de Peon run the full living demonstration: fields worked, leaves shredded on original machinery, fiber spun, mule-drawn rail platforms rattling guests to a cenote swim. Yaxcopoil stands preserved-as-found, its faded grandeur uncurated and moving. And a constellation of luxury conversions - Temozon, Santa Rosa, San Jose and their kin - turned machine rooms into dining halls and worker barracks into pool suites. Together they are Yucatan's plantation memory, told with increasing honesty about the labor that built it.
