Guayabera Shirts

In Yucatan the guayabera is not resort wear - it is the suit. Presidents sign treaties in it, grooms marry in it, and any Merida evening event will fill with the shirt's signature grammar: two or four patch pockets, twin rows of fine alforzas - the knife pleats running full-length front and back - and a straight hem worn untucked against the heat. Cuba and Yucatan both claim the invention; Yucatan indisputably industrialized the elegance, and the village of Tekit, southeast of Merida, became the "city of the guayabera," where hundreds of family workshops sew for the whole peninsula. The hierarchy runs from crisp cotton-poly everyday shirts to the summit: pure Irish linen, hand-finished, in wedding white. Merida's guayabera houses - some tailoring since the 1950s - fit visitors amid walls of white, sky blue and guava pink, embroider monograms while you lunch, and will argue pocket philosophy at length. Bought properly, it is the most useful souvenir Mexico sells: formalwear that forgives 40 degrees.

Year-round; allow a day if commissioning tailoring or embroidery. January and pre-wedding seasons rush the famous houses.

Honest expectations

True linen costs linen prices - the market-stall version is a different garment. Fittings conducted in Spanish reach perfect understanding through mirrors. Wrinkles are part of linen's contract.
