Ticul

Ticul is what a working Yucatecan town looks like when two crafts move in permanently. The first is clay: the red earth of the Puuc foothills has fed potters since Maya times, and the workshops along the Calle de los Artesanos still turn it into everything from garden planters and tiles to museum-quality reproductions of Maya vessels - several ateliers supply archaeological replicas to institutions, and visitors can watch wheels, moulds and pit kilns in action before buying at source. The second is shoes: Ticul's zapaterias, dozens of small factories and family workshops, produce footwear sold across the peninsula, and the showrooms along the main streets price sandals and leather far below city retail. Between the two industries runs ordinary Puuc life - a triciclo-taxi plaza, the seventeenth-century church of San Antonio, panaderias and cocina economica lunches - plus a regional reputation for poc chuc rivaling Mani's. As the nearest real town to Uxmal, it makes the honest, unpolished base for ruin country.

Ticul is a trade town, not a showpiece - charm is in the workshops, not the architecture. Ask before photographing artisans. English is minimal; prices are refreshingly local.
