Merida's great museum takes its architecture from the tree that holds up the Maya cosmos: the building, opened in 2012, abstracts a monumental ceiba in concrete and glass, its canopy-roof sheltering the entrance plaza where evening projections play. Inside, the permanent collection - above a thousand pieces - walks the Maya world from its geological beginnings to the present tense. The Chicxulub asteroid, which struck just offshore of Yucatan, opens the story with fossils and meteorite fragments; galleries of masterworks follow - carved stelae and lintels, jade masks and funerary offerings, ceramic figures from Jaina island, the reassembled facade elements of Puuc palaces - organized around Maya cosmology, timekeeping and daily life. The distinguishing insistence is continuity: rooms of contemporary Yucatec Maya culture - huipil embroidery, milpa farming, language recordings, urban Maya lives - refuse the "vanished civilization" frame. Interpretation runs trilingually in Spanish, English and Yucatec Maya. It is the region's essential context stop - ideally before the ruins, not after.

Honest expectations

The location is a ride from the centro, among malls and the convention center - no colonial charm at the door. Temporary shows vary in strength. Teen-and-up visitors get the most from the text-rich displays.
