Casa de los Venados

Half a block off Valladolid's plaza, an unassuming colonial door opens into one of Mexico's great private collections - and one of its most generous arrangements. John and Dorianne Venator spent decades assembling more than 3,000 pieces of contemporary Mexican folk art - alebrijes, trees of life, Huichol beadwork, ceremonial masks, ceramics and textiles from master artisans across the republic - and rather than found a museum, they installed the collection throughout their restored 18,000-square-foot hacienda-style home: skeleton mariachis serenade the living room, a Catrina presides over the bar, museum-grade ceramics set the dining table. Every morning the house opens for guided tours - often led by the owners themselves - with donations passed to local charities. The pleasure is double: world-class folk art seen in domestic use rather than vitrines, and the house itself, a colonial restoration of courtyards, pool and beams that architecture magazines duly celebrated. It has become Valladolid's unmissable indoor hour.

When to go

Tours run mid-morning daily - arrive at the posted time; the visit takes about an hour. Any season; the house shrugs at weather.

Honest expectations

It is a home first: visits are guided-only, at fixed hours, and rooms are viewed as furnished, not labeled. The donation is modest and goes to charity - give properly. Photography is generally welcomed; check on arrival.
