Estadio Azteca

No stadium on earth carries more football history than the Azteca. Opened in 1966 and built to hold over a hundred thousand, it staged the 1970 final where Pele's Brazil produced the tournament's most celebrated football, and the 1986 edition where Maradona scored both the Hand of God and the Goal of the Century against England in the same afternoon - then lifted the cup where Pele had. It remains the fortress of Club America and the Mexican national team, whose green shirts turn the vast bowl into a wall of noise on qualifying nights, and it is set to become the first stadium to host matches in three World Cups when the tournament returns in 2026. The altitude - 2,200 metres - and the enclosed tiers give it an atmosphere visiting teams dread. Non-match days offer tours of the tunnel, pitchside and the plaques honoring 1970 and 1986; match days offer the real thing, from family-friendly league fixtures to derbies that shake the concrete.

Renovation for 2026 has altered capacity and access at times - check the current situation before planning. It is a long ride from the center. Big derbies sell out and resale prices climb steeply.
