The Blue House of Coyoacan - Frida Kahlo's birthplace, home and shrine, kept close to how she left it with easels, Tehuana dresses and the garden courtyard.

Illustrative image - a scene in the spirit of the place, not a photograph of it. Real photos are below.
The Casa Azul is exactly what its name promises - a house of intense cobalt blue in the old village streets of Coyoacan, where Frida Kahlo was born in 1907 and died in 1954, and which opened as her museum in 1958. Few artists' houses hold this much presence: her studio keeps the easel and wheelchair, her day bed carries the mirror under which she painted herself, and the yellow-and-blue kitchen, the painted corsets and the wardrobe of Tehuana dresses map a life lived in pain and colour. Diego Rivera is everywhere too, from folk-art collections to the small stone pyramid he built in the garden courtyard for their pre-Hispanic idols. The rooms are intimate and the objects personal - votive paintings, letters, jars in the kitchen - which is precisely why the queue outside runs down the block.
What you actually see
- The studio - easel, brushes and wheelchair by the garden window.
- The Tehuana wardrobe - dresses and painted corsets as self-invention.
- The kitchen - yellow and blue, hung with pots and tiny cups.
- The garden pyramid - Rivera's plinth for their pre-Hispanic idols.
When to go
Year-round; weekday mornings are calmest. Book the timed ticket online well ahead - same-day entry rarely exists, and weekends sell out first.
Honest expectations
Tickets sell out days or weeks ahead and the rooms are small, so the flow can feel slow and shoulder-to-shoulder. Photography requires a small extra permit. Pair it with Coyoacan's plazas rather than rushing back to the centre - the neighbourhood is half the pleasure.
Nearby
Coyoacan's plazas and market, the Anahuacalli museum and the canals of Xochimilco to the south.
